Introducing our latest product: Adoration of the Shepherds by Gerard Van Honthorst Canvas Wall Art | Perfect Gift for Christians;
The Adoration of the Shepherds by Gerrit van Honthorst is one of the biggest crowd-pleasers in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum – and not only at Christmas time. The Dutch master’s intimate view of the Nativity is unique, making it one of the most fascinating adoration scenes in art history.
He came in the form of a small baby but one with a powerful message to all sentient beings. We have arrived in the stable in that “little town of Bethlehem” and have entered the hushed yet powerfully electric presence of Jesus. The small being radiates a glow that warms the heart and soul. It is a glow not of this earth and hints at the energy and power that will emerge from this small, innocent child. We see Mary looking on to her newborn son with love and confidence while the shepherds look upon the little miracle that has appeared in their midst. The large cow to the right of the picture seems both interested and calm at the same time. The figures are all smiles as the radiant love of the new arrival permeates their souls and the look of joy is clear on their respective countenances. There is a sense of realism at work here as we take in the simple yet intriguing spectacle before us. The organic nature of the scene seems as if we could reach out and touch it. Take the straw for example; one can almost smell the grassiness of the pile. The thing that stands out the most for me is the contrast between the light from the manger and the surrounding darkness. The light seems to be causing the dark to dissipate. It seems to give one that feeling of being in the woods around a warm fire, you know the kind where you can see your breath in the darkness and all around is an infinite blackness broken only by the light source, at least that’s the palpable feeling I get from this work. The light and shadow play ever so beautifully across the simple robes that adorn the assembly and this gives the suggestion of the truth and goodness in living a life of simplicity and humility. As to the object in the lower right hand corner of the work, of that I am not so sure. Perhaps it is a seal that the painter added to honor the place of residence in which this work once hung in. In any case, the painting is a beautiful example of baroque mastery.
